In the 90s and early 2000s, Times New Roman, 12 pt size was the gold standard. If you didn't use that for a paper, it was essentially rejected. It was such an ugly font, too! (I'm not a fan of serif fonts).
Now MSFT changes the defaults up all the time

It's really just a lack of understanding. All it's supposed to do is provide typing indicators and higher quality media for now. The security is no worse than plain sms. Google is working on end to end implementation. I'd trust data in transit but it wouldn't be my choice for "secure" messaging
